First Annual Report of St. Brigid’s Orphanage (1857) - in association with the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. The report includes an introduction to the development and operations of St. Bridget’s Orphanage (also spelled Brigid) as ‘an accessory work' undertook during 1857 by the Ladies’ Association of Charity. Initially, this introduction was part of the Sixth Annual Report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity (1857). A notice of this is printed on page 1 of this report: ‘This Report was originally a portion of the Sixth Annual Report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity, Metropolitan Parish, for the year 1857 but as St. Brigid’s Orphanage has attained since that time such a large development, it is considered expedient to reprint this Report separately.’
The report notes that the first meeting for St. Brigid’s Orphanage was held on 16 January 1857, at 6 Middle Gardiner Street, Dublin. The report provides statistics for the number of orphans and describes the concept of a boarding-out system (foster care), involving 'nurses' (foster parents) living in the countryside. The boarding-out system would become the main system of operation for the orphanage. The report describes the work of the Protestant Orphan Society. It also notes the passing of a resolution requesting the establishment of a large orphanage. A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage is listed (including clergymen and guild associations). In the appendix is a form of bequest to St. Brigid’s Orphanage.
