Description
An account of the resource
This digital collection consists of a series of fifty annual reports of St. Brigid's Orphanage. Initially, from 1857 to 1860, the reports were delivered as part of the Annual Reports of the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Overall, the reports detail the number of orphans; the reunification of orphans with parents; orphan adoptions; the schooling of orphans; the rearing of orphans; and often note mortality rates and apprenticeships. Examples of orphan circumstances are often depicted. The reports describe the support and donations for the cause; noting the support of clergymen and several guild associations. The boarding-out (foster care) system is described throughout the reports along with premiums paid to nurses (foster parents) with explanations of how the payment system works. In general, the reports offer insights to the protocols for religious instruction and education. Most reports discuss Proselytism, and some reports provide information about Protestant institutions (orphanages, schools, etc.). According to Jacinta Prunty (1999, 56-57), Margaret Aylward is considered to be the main author of these reports prior to her death in 1889. The reports are valuable little-known primary sources for the study of charity networks, poor relief, orphan statistics, childcare, foster care, and education in nineteenth-century Ireland.

On behalf of the Sisters of the Holy Faith Congregational Archives, this collection was digitised and curated by Helena La Pina (2020).

References Prunty, J. (1999) Margaret Aylward, 1810-89: Lady of Charity, Sister of Faith, Four Courts Press Ltd.

Second annual report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul attached to the Metropolitan Parish of Dublin and instituted for the Spiritual and Temporal Relief of the Sick Poor (presented at Annual Meeting, 10 June 1853). The report describes statistics regarding membership numbers, donations, and visitations to the Sick Poor and attendance of the dying. Several case studies or testimonies are provided, detailing visitations of the Sick Poor. It notes an extension of parishes for the association in Dublin, with the addition of a branch in Cork. The report describes other accessory or accidental works of the association, including the ‘emissaries of heresy’, and approaching parents to send Catholic children to Catholic schools. It suggests that the distance of Catholic schools is often too great for a child to travel, and thus, they attend Protestant schools close by. It discusses a proposal to set up a Catholic ‘Infant School’ using the Anti-Proselytising Fund. The report discusses the establishment of St. Mary’s Industrial Institute, and the benefits of providing needlework employment for the poor women. The Council Management is listed. The report includes a financial statement of donations, subscriptions and expenditure of the association, and lists benefactors. In the appendix is a letter of solicitation for support, financial contributions, and membership, and an account of St. Mary’s Industrial Institute.

An account of the resource
This digital collection consists of a series of eleven annual reports of the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul attached to the Metropolitan Parish of Dublin and instituted for the Spiritual and Temporal Relief of the Sick Poor. Published from 1852-1862, the reports describe the association’s mission, organisation, finances, events, challenges, and triumphs. The reports provide statistics regarding membership numbers, and the administration of the organisation. Several case studies or testimonies are provided in the reports, detailing the visitation of the Sick Poor. The reports include financial statements of donations, subscriptions and expenditures of the association, and list benefactors. The first report includes an account of the origins and describes the introduction of the association of St. Vincent de Paul into Ireland, and the introduction of the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul to the Dublin Metropolis. According to Jacinta Prunty (1999, 56-57), Margaret Aylward is considered to be the main author of these reports. The reports are valuable little-known primary sources for the study of charity networks, poor relief, childcare, and education in nineteenth-century Ireland.

On behalf of the Sisters of the Holy Faith Congregational Archives, this collection was digitised and curated by Helena La Pina (2020).

References
Prunty, J. An account of the resource
Sixth annual report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul attached to the Metropolitan Parish of Dublin and instituted for the Spiritual and Temporal Relief of the Sick Poor (presented at Annual Meeting, 01 December 1857). The report describes statistics regarding membership numbers, donations, and visitations to the Sick Poor. Several case studies or testimonies are provided, detailing visitations of the Sick Poor. The Council Management is listed. The report includes a financial statement of donations, subscriptions and expenditure of the association, and lists benefactors. In the appendix is a letter of solicitation for support, financial contributions, and membership.
The sixth report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity also includes an introduction to development of St. Bridget’s Orphanage (usually spelled Brigid’s) as ‘an accessory work' undertook during the year by the association. It notes that the first meeting for St. Brigid’s Orphanage was held on 16 January 1857, at 6 Middle Gardiner Street. It describes the concept of a boarding-out system, involving 'nurses' (foster parents) living in the countryside. It notes the work of the Protestant Orphan Society. It describes the passing of a resolution requesting the establishment of a large orphanage. A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage are listed.
Note: While printed in this report as an introduction to St. Brigid’s Orphanage, the introduction was then adopted as the basis for the first annual report of St. Brigid's Orphanage (1857) and reprinted separately.

The report describes statistics regarding membership numbers, donations, and visitations to the Sick Poor. This report contains less informational details than previous reports. Apologies are presented for the tardiness of the report, which was due in 1860, and represents the financial year of June 1859-June 1860. The report was presented in the absence of Margaret Aylward who, since November 1860, was serving a prison sentence for contempt of court. The report includes a financial statement of donations, subscriptions and expenditure of the association, and lists benefactors. In the appendix is a letter of solicitation for support, financial contributions, and membership.

Description

References
Prunty, J.

Description
An account of the resource
First Annual Report of St. Brigid’s Orphanage (1857) - in association with the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. The report includes an introduction to the development and operations of St. Bridget’s Orphanage (also spelled Brigid) as ‘an accessory work' undertook during 1857 by the Ladies’ Association of Charity. Initially, this introduction was part of the Sixth Annual Report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity (1857). A notice of this is printed on page 1 of this report: ‘This Report was originally a portion of the Sixth Annual Report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity, Metropolitan Parish, for the year 1857 but as St. Brigid’s Orphanage has attained since that time such a large development, it is considered expedient to reprint this Report separately.’
The report notes that the first meeting for St. Brigid’s Orphanage was held on 16 January 1857, at 6 Middle Gardiner Street, Dublin. The report provides statistics for the number of orphans and describes the concept of a boarding-out system (foster care), involving 'nurses' (foster parents) living in the countryside. The boarding-out system would become the main system of operation for the orphanage. The report describes the work of the Protestant Orphan Society. It also notes the passing of a resolution requesting the establishment of a large orphanage. A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage is listed (including clergymen and guild associations). In the appendix is a form of bequest to St. Brigid’s Orphanage.

Second Annual Report of St. Brigid’s Orphanage (1858) - in association with the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (presented at Annual Meeting, 18 November 1859). The report documents the origins of St. Brigid’s Orphanage and its organisation. It describes support and donations for the cause; noting the support of clergymen and several guild associations. It provides examples of cases of Proselytism amongst 'Catholic Orphans'; and examples of children being saved from ‘heresy’. It includes a poem titled 'St. Bridget's Orphan'. Examples of orphan circumstances are depicted. It details the number of orphans; the schooling of orphans; the boarding-out (foster care) system and premiums paid to nurses (foster parents). The operations of the Protestant Orphan Society are articulated. Several resolutions were printed in the Freeman's Journal and are reprinted in this report. A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage is listed (including clergymen and guild associations). This report was also included as part of the Seventh Annual Report of the Ladies’ Association of Charity (1858).

An account of the resource
Fourth Annual Report of St. Brigid’s Orphanage (1860) - in association with the Ladies’ Association of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (presented at Annual Meeting, 16 January 1861). The report was presented in the absence of Margaret Aylward who, since November 1860, was serving a prison sentence for contempt of court. This report documents the rationales for the acceptance of children, regardless of money or health with an emphasis on those ‘in danger of a loss of faith’. Examples of orphan circumstances are depicted, alongside parent testimonies. It documents the organisation of St. Brigid's Orphanage; support and donations for the cause; and guild associations. It provides examples of letters from donors. The boarding-out (foster care) system is described; and premiums paid to nurses (foster parents) is discussed with explanations of how the payment system works. It details the number of orphans; the schooling of orphans; and the rearing of orphans. The report examines Proselytism under the heading of ‘War against the Faith of Catholic Orphans’. Speeches and resolutions are provided. They include a speech by the Lord Archbishop of Dublin, Paul Cullen; and a resolution proposed by Rev. Cannon Roche, pertaining to defraying expenses relating to Margaret Aylward’s imprisonment. A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage is listed (including clergymen and guild associations). In the appendix is a letter of solicitation for support, donations and subscriptions. Additionally, in the appendix is a document titled ‘Statistics of Proselytism: Perils of the Faith of Catholic Orphans’ and provides an account of Protestant institutions (orphanages, schools, etc.) Also, in the appendix is a reprint of a letter from 1859 by the Lord Archbishop of Dublin, Paul Cullen, addressed to the Ladies Association of Charity; and a statement by Dr Cullen, pertaining to the work of the Ladies, which was presented to Pope Pius IX.

Twenty-Second Annual Report of St. Brigid’s Orphanage (1878) (presented at Annual Meeting, 30 November 1878). It is submitted by the ‘Managers’ of St. Brigid’s Orphanage and Schools of the Holy Faith. The report notes on the death of the Archbishop (Paul Cullen) and discusses his support for the organisation from its infancy. The report details the number of orphans; reunification of orphans with parents; orphan adoptions; orphan apprenticeships; the schooling of orphans; and the rearing of orphans. It notes that admittance criteria and applications lodged in a daybook when a child is received and offers thirteen examples. The boarding-out (foster care) system and premiums paid to nurses (foster parents) is discussed. Protocols for religious instruction and education in general is detailed. The report intermingles Protestant indoctrination and the benefits of a Catholic education. The report discusses the work of the Holy Faith schools for poor Catholic children. The mission of the schools is noted: 'the schools of the Holy Faith were established to serve as auxiliaries to the orphanage, that is, to do for poor children who have parents what the orphanage does for children who have lost their parents’. Private tuition is also mentioned: ‘a middle school was opened for them in the Convent Clarendon Street, for it is reasonable that those who are able should pay for the education of their children’. The loss of faith throughout Europe is mentioned. It describes support and donations for the cause; noting the support of clergymen and several guild associations. A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage and Holy Faith Schools is listed (including clergymen and guild associations). In the appendix is a letter of solicitation for support, donations and subscriptions. Also, in the appendix is a description of assistance of the Sisters of the Holy Faith to the Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Charity, in Lower 65 Lower Jervis Street.

Description
An account of the resource
Thirty-First Annual Report of St. Brigid’s Orphanage (1887). The report details the number of orphans; reunification of orphans with parents; orphan adoptions; orphan apprenticeships; the schooling of orphans; and the rearing of orphans. The benefit of the boarding-out system is described; and premiums paid to nurses (foster parents) is noted. The report notes that soon after the foundation of the orphanage ‘a tiny book of instructions was given to each nurse, in which directions in detail were laid down for the rearing and training of children’. The instructions are reprinted in this report, and the chief duties totalled 6 (instruction, correction, good example, vigilance, schooling and work). Sacraments fall into the vigilance category. Protocols for religious instruction and education is detailed. Under ‘correction’ it notes that the beating of a child by a nurse is deemed as ‘criminal’. Schooling is also stressed as important whereby children are to remain in school 'until they shall have learned to read well, to write fairly, and as much figures as will enable them to transact hereafter all the business of housekeeping, of fair, and market correctly’. The report discusses the work of the Holy Faith schools. It details that renovations had been made to some schools following the previous report. It notes that the late Archbishop Cardinal McCabe, allocated £1,000 for such renovations and the current Archbishop (Joseph William Walsh) allocated £500. The mission of both the orphanage and schools are described as ‘to preserve the Faith in the persons of helpless and destitute Orphans, to rekindle the faith in the children of the poor and bring them up in strong Faith.’ A list of benefactors and donations to St. Brigid’s Orphanage and Holy Faith Schools is listed (including clergymen and guild associations). In the appendix is a letter of solicitation for support, donations and subscriptions. Also, in the appendix is a description of assistance of the Sisters of the Holy Faith to the Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen Of Charity, in Lower 65 Lower Jervis Street; and an extract of a pamphlet published by his Lordship the Bishop of Southwark and kindly presented to St. Brigid’s Orphanage, titled ‘Practical Direction and Suggestions as to Appointed Testamentary Guardian.’
